Iraq rejects Syrian request to repatriate 4,000 suspected Daesh detainees, official says

Iraq has denied Syria’s request to repatriate thousands of suspected Islamic State members transferred from Syrian detention centers to Iraqi custody earlier this year. Iraq’s National Security Adviser, Qasim Al-Aboudi, said Syria and the US discussed the prisoners’ fate at a recent meeting. More than 5,700 prisoners, including 4,000 Syrians, were moved to Iraq after clashes in Syria. Iraq refused to hand over the Syrian prisoners, including 400 believed to be senior IS members. Al-Aboudi said Iraq is investigating and will prosecute those who commit crimes in Iraq under Iraqi law.
